Kahungye Gorilla Family

Kahungye Gorilla Family

Kahungye Gorilla Group is found in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and is one of the 10 habituated Mountain Gorilla Groups that are sheltered by the impenetrable forests of Bwindi.

Briefly, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is one of the forests situated in the southwestern part of Uganda. The forest apparently has four regions i.e Buhoma, Nkuringo, Rushaga and Ruhija each habit ting its own troop of Mountain Gorillas.

Among the most interesting sectors to track Mountain gorillas from is the Rushaga sector, the same and only sector where Uganda Gorilla habituation experiences take place from.

Kahungye gorilla group is sizable in number even after a split which occurred a couple of years ago that saw the birth of a new Mountain Gorilla family called the Busingye Gorilla group.

The name Kahungye comes from a hill in Rushaga where the family was first spotted. It is currently composed of 13 members including 3 Silverbacks. However, this is a tentative number and keeps changing due to a number of factors like demise of gorillas, new entrants, members leaving a group for other groups or rather new births in the group.

This group was opened for trekking in the year 2011 after a successful habituation but unfortunately they split in less than a year to give birth to a new group called Busingye. Before the misunderstandings and separation saga, the family comprised of 27 members with 3 Silverbacks.

The group is currently led by ‘Gwigi’ the silverback. The name Gwigi means ‘door’ in Rukiga, one of the native languages in Uganda.
